To improvise is to "to compose, or simultaneously
compose and perform, on the spur of the moment and without any preparation"
- continuum of improvisation
- variation on a theme (changing a single note or rhythm) to total freedom
& unpredictability
- interpretation vs. improvisation
- higher levels of improvisation found mostly in adventurous jazz, but "rave-ups"
of Clapton's Yardbirds also exhibit this level of freedom
- others—the Grateful Dead's 30-minute pieces, Hendrix' Electric Ladyland
Fundamentals of improvisation:
- technical mastery of the instrument
- solid rhythmic feel
- thorough knowledge of chords and scales; vertical vs. horizontal organization
- solo must have a shape
- as you listen, pay attention to solos critically
