• composer/author and exact time & place of origin are usually unknown

most 60s "folk music" was not authentic folk music in this sense, rather ... in the style of ... (model was the Appalachian folk ballad)

lyrics tended to be more serious than typical rock lyrics

• dealt with issues of national significance (war, labor movement, politics, legal & social injustice, etc.)
